How it works

Each project starts with its own priorities, opportunities, budget and constraints, but having a clear process helps make the decisions along the way easier to understand.

I will guide you through each stage, helping you understand what needs to happen, when decisions need to be made, and who else may need to be involved.

A clear path from first ideas to construction.

Our Process

  • Understand

    Start with the right information.

Before jumping into design, I take time to understand your property, what you want to achieve, available budget and any constraints that may influence the project.

    This can include:

    • an initial conversation and site visit

    • developing the project brief

    • reviewing existing property information

    • planning and consent considerations

    • identifying likely consultants

    • early discussion around budget and programme

    • identifying where investment is likely to have the greatest impact

For early-stage projects, this may begin with Project Establishment - a focused first step to clarify what’s possible and what should happen next.

  • Explore

    Explore

    Test the possibilities.

Once the brief is understood, I can start exploring how the project might take shape.

This is where ideas are tested through plans, sketches and three-dimensional studies, considering how the spaces work together, natural light, orientation, connection to outside, the existing building and the character of the site.

Your feedback is an important part of this stage.

As the design develops, key decisions can be tested against budget, planning requirements, energy performance and buildability.

  • Resolve

    Resolve

Turn the idea into a buildable design.

Once the overall direction is agreed, the design is developed in greater detail.

Consultant information is coordinated, materials and construction systems are resolved, and the drawings are developed to the level required for approvals and construction.

    This stage can include:

    • developed design

    • consultant coordination

    • resource consent, where required

    • building consent documentation

    • detailed architectural documentation

    • ongoing cost review

    • refinement of thermal performance, material use and long-term durability

By the end of this stage, the design has moved from an idea into a coordinated set of information that can be priced and built.

  • Realise

    Realise

Carry the design through to construction.

I can assist with tendering and contractor selection, respond to queries during the build, observe work on site and administer the construction contract where required.

    This may include:

    • tendering and contractor selection

    • contract administration

    • responding to construction queries

    • reviewing variations

    • site observation

    • helping maintain the design intent and performance objectives through the build

While architectural involvement during construction is optional, continuing the service through to completion helps protect the design intent, resolve issues as they arise, and support a more coordinated outcome on site.

The level of involvement can be tailored to suit the project and your needs.

Your project deserves thoughtful attention, care and architectural expertise from the very beginning.
